Way back in the mists of time, when computers were first developed as servers they used specialised external storage devices Ė often large tape drives or hard disks Ė that attached through a proprietary interface. As time went by, the computers shrunk in size but increased in capability. The storage shrunk in size even more Ė allowing disks to be directly attached within the server. ..........
